Authority is your reliable inner way of making decisions in Human Design, used alongside your type's Strategy to tell you what is actually right for you. It comes from which centers are defined in your chart, and it works the same way every time once you know how to read it.
What Authority is
Your Authority is not an idea about how you should decide. It is a physical, repeatable signal that shows up in your body before your mind finishes its argument. Human Design maps it to whichever center in your chart is defined and sits highest in a fixed order of precedence.
The mind is good at building a case. It can argue either side of almost anything and sound convincing both times. Authority is not concerned with the case. It is concerned with what your Solar Plexus, Sacral, Spleen, Heart or G Center is already telling you, quietly, underneath the argument.
This is why Human Design keeps Strategy and Authority together. Strategy is how you engage the world and meet opportunities. Authority is how you sort the ones that are actually yours from the ones that only look good on paper.
How to find yours
Your Authority is set by which centers are defined in your chart, checked in a fixed order. Whichever one appears first on this list is yours, no matter what else is defined:
If the Solar Plexus is defined, your Authority is Emotional. It always wins over every other center, including a defined Sacral.
If the Solar Plexus is undefined and the Sacral is defined, your Authority is Sacral. This is only available to Generators and Manifesting Generators.
If both of those are undefined and the Spleen is defined, your Authority is Splenic.
If none of those three are defined and the Heart is defined, your Authority is Ego.
If none of those four are defined and a Projector's G Center connects to the Throat, the Authority is Self-Projected.
If a Projector has definition only in the Head, Ajna or Throat, with none of the centers above defined, the Authority is Mental.
Reflectors have no defined centers at all. Their Authority is Lunar.
You need your actual chart to know which of these applies to you. This page describes what each one feels like once you know.
The seven authorities
Emotional Authority
Emotional Authority means your Solar Plexus is defined and it outranks every other center. There is no truth in the now. Whatever feels certain tonight can look different by Wednesday, and both views are partial until the wave has had time to move.
Clarity comes over time. It does not arrive in the moment a decision is asked for. A yes said on a high and a no said on a low are both suspect. The practice is to ride the wave out, feeling the highs and the lows on the same question, before you commit.
Sacral Authority
Sacral Authority belongs to Generators and Manifesting Generators whose Sacral is defined and whose Solar Plexus is not. It answers in the moment, as a gut response to something specific and real in front of you. It has little to say about a hypothetical.
It sounds less like a sentence and more like a sound: an "uh-huh" that means yes, an "unh-unh" that means no. It rarely explains itself. Having someone ask you a yes-or-no question out loud, and listening for the sound that comes out before the words catch up, is often the clearest way to hear it.
Splenic Authority
Splenic Authority shows up when the Spleen is defined and neither the Solar Plexus nor the Sacral is. It speaks once, quietly, in the present moment, about what supports survival and well-being right now.
It does not repeat itself and it does not shout. Miss it while you are busy weighing pros and cons and it can be gone, which is why the practice here is speed of noticing more than volume. A Splenic hit that turns out to matter often looks, afterward, like it was obvious the whole time.
Ego Authority
Ego Authority runs through the Heart center, also called the Ego or Will center, and it plays out differently by type. A Manifestor whose Heart connects to the Throat has what is sometimes called ego manifested Authority: what the will wants to say or do comes straight out.
A Projector whose Heart connects to the G Center has ego projected Authority: the question is whether you have the will and the appetite for this specific thing. Whether it sounds reasonable matters less. Either way, the check is the same. Does your will actually want this, or does your reasoning want it on your will's behalf?
Self-Projected Authority
Self-Projected Authority belongs to Projectors whose G Center connects to the Throat, with none of the Solar Plexus, Sacral, Spleen or Heart defined. Clarity here is verbal. It arrives while you are talking. Thinking quietly to yourself rarely gets you there.
The move is to describe the decision out loud to someone you trust and listen to your own voice as you do it. Some sentences will come out steady. Others will catch, hesitate or trail off, and that catch is information your silent thinking would have missed.
Mental Authority
Mental Authority, also called Environmental Authority or having no inner authority, belongs to Projectors defined only in the Head, Ajna and/or Throat. There is no defined Solar Plexus, Sacral, Spleen, Heart or G-to-Throat connection to check against, so the process itself has to happen outside your own head.
Clarity builds by talking a decision through with a small number of trusted people and by paying attention to where you are when you talk it through. The right environment tends to make the right answer easier to hear, and the wrong room can make even a good decision feel murky.
Lunar Authority
Lunar Authority belongs to Reflectors, whose openness across all nine centers means no single center can act as a stable signal. Instead, clarity is a matter of time: roughly a full lunar cycle, about 28 to 29 days.
For anything significant, a Reflector's job is to keep the question open and keep noticing how it shifts as the moon completes its cycle and as different people and places come into the picture. What looks settled on day two can move by day twenty, and the point is to let it.
Strategy by type
Strategy tells you how to meet the world. Authority tells you what to do once something shows up. The two are meant to run together.
A Generator's Strategy is to respond. Life brings something to react to, and the Sacral or Solar Plexus response says whether it is worth pursuing. A Manifesting Generator's Strategy is to respond, then inform, telling the people affected before acting on the response.
A Projector's Strategy is to wait for the invitation, especially for the big things: career moves, close relationships, where to live. Recognition and invitation open doors that pushing rarely does. A Manifestor's Strategy is to inform, telling people what you are about to do before you do it, which tends to clear resistance that would otherwise show up later.
A Reflector's Strategy is to wait a full lunar cycle before locking in anything major, letting Lunar Authority do its slow work in the meantime.
Practicing your Authority day to day
Authority is easiest to trust with small, low-stakes decisions first. What to eat, whether to go to the thing tonight, whether to answer the email now or tomorrow. Small reps build the pattern recognition that big decisions later depend on.
It also helps to separate the question from the pressure to answer it fast. A recruiter's deadline, a partner waiting on a text, a sale ending at midnight: these create urgency that has nothing to do with whether your Authority has actually spoken yet. Real decisions can usually wait long enough for your process to complete, even if that process takes a mood cycle or a lunar month.
Over time the goal is not to get better at analyzing your options. It is to get faster at noticing what your body already answered, and quieter about arguing with it.
A question to sit with. Think of a recent decision you made quickly, from your head. What did your body seem to know before your mind built the case for it?
