Gate 27 in Human Design and Gene Key 27
Gate 27 belongs to the Sacral, the body's engine for work and response. It carries the instinct to nourish and look after what is around you. Gene Key 27 describes that instinct maturing from the Shadow of Selfishness into the Gift of Altruism.

What Gate 27 means in Human Design
The Sacral center is the engine of Human Design, the source of the life force behind work, building and getting things done. The I Ching calls it The Corners of the Mouth, an image about how a being feeds itself and others. This gate is about caretaking as a bodily instinct rather than a decision made from principle.
With this gate, you often feel a pull to make sure the people, animals, projects or communities around you are actually being fed, in whatever sense applies. That might be literal food, attention, resources or protection. It is not performative kindness. It runs at the level of the gut, closer to hunger than to ethics.
Because this instinct is so strong, it needs a boundary or it burns the source out. Caring for everyone around you at the expense of your own supply is not the healthy version of this gate. It is the same instinct with nothing feeding it back.
The Channel of Preservation
The Channel of Preservation (27-50) runs from Gate 27 in the Sacral to Gate 50 in the Spleen center. Gate 50 holds the values and instinctive sense of what is fair or out of bounds. Gate 27 supplies the raw energy to act on caring for others. When the channel is defined, nurturing becomes a constant, shaped by a strong internal sense of right and wrong. It often shows up as responsibility for the wellbeing of a family, a team or a community.
If Gate 50 is not defined in your chart, Gate 27 is a hanging gate. The pull to nourish is just as real, and it tends to attach to whoever is in front of you. Spend time with someone who has Gate 50 defined and their values and boundaries can start shaping how and where you care.
Gene Key 27: from Selfishness to Altruism
At the Shadow of Selfishness, the caring instinct turns inward and stays there. Resources, attention or energy get hoarded out of a fear that there will not be enough, which can look like coldness even when it comes from genuine scarcity fear rather than indifference.
At the Gift of Altruism, the same instinct starts flowing outward without the fear attached. Nourishing others stops feeling like a depletion and starts feeling like the natural use of the energy this gate generates. The giving does not come at the cost of the self, because it is no longer coming from lack.
The Siddhi is Selflessness, where the distinction between feeding yourself and feeding others dissolves, and care becomes simply how the whole system runs. The programming partner here is Gene Key 28, which moves from Purposelessness to Totality. The pairing ties caring for life to the sense of purpose that keeps the caring from draining you.
How Gate 27 shows up day to day
In a group, Gate 27 is usually the one who notices who has not eaten, who is running low, or who needs checking on before anyone asks.
A few places this plays out:
- Before taking on someone else's problem, check your own supply first. This gate gives more sustainably when it is not running on empty.
- Roles built around care fit this energy naturally: managing a team, running a household, coaching, healthcare or hospitality.
- Caretaking can quietly become a way to avoid being cared for yourself, so notice who looks after you.
- When resources feel tight, notice whether the instinct is to hoard or to keep giving past your own limit. Both extremes are worth catching.
A question to sit with. Who are you feeding right now at a cost to your own supply, and what would it take to let that be reciprocal?
