What the North Node is

The North Node is not a planet, a star or any physical body at all. It's a point in the sky: the place where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic (the plane of the Earth's path around the Sun) heading north. The South Node is the exact opposite point, where that same orbit crosses heading south.

Older texts call them the Dragon's Head and Dragon's Tail. The names come from eclipses, which happen only when a new or full Moon falls near the nodes, and which older traditions pictured as a dragon swallowing the Sun or Moon. Modern astrology mostly uses the plainer names, North Node and South Node, and reads the two as a pair.

The two nodes move backward through the zodiac, opposite the direction the Sun and planets travel. A full cycle takes about 18.6 years, and the nodes spend about 18 months in each sign before moving into the one before it. Many astrologers connect that backward motion with how the North Node feels. Most of the chart moves forward while the nodes move back, and growth toward the North Node can feel like working against the grain.

This guide uses the true node, which tracks the Moon's actual, slightly wobbling path rather than a smoothed average. Some sources use the mean node instead. The two usually agree on the sign, but their dates for a sign change can differ by a few weeks. If your birth date falls near a change, that difference is worth knowing about before you settle on a sign.

North Node and South Node as one axis

The North Node and South Node are always in opposite signs, and they're best read as a single axis rather than two separate placements. The South Node sign describes skills that come without effort. They are patterns you likely picked up early and can lean on without thinking.

The North Node sign describes the direction those skills need to grow toward. It does not replace the South Node's strengths. It corrects the habit of overusing them. Growth along this axis tends to mean keeping what the South Node does well and aiming it somewhere the North Node can use it.
