What the cross is

The Sun and Earth are always exactly opposite each other on the wheel, so your Earth gate is always the gate directly across from your Sun gate. That is true for both your conscious placement and your unconscious placement, which means your cross is really built from two Sun positions and the two Earth positions that automatically come with them.

There are 192 possible crosses in total: each of the 64 gates can anchor a cross in three different geometries. Crosses are named individually, for example the Right Angle Cross of the Sphinx, but this guide does not attempt to list all 192 by name.

The name of a cross usually points to the conscious Sun gate at its center, though the full theme only comes into focus once the Earth, and the unconscious Sun and Earth, are read alongside it. Two people can share a Sun gate and still carry different crosses, because the geometry depends on the profile.

The four gates and how to read them together

Your conscious Sun gate is usually treated as the headline, the theme you are most aware of and can describe about your own purpose. Your conscious Earth gate grounds that theme, the practical direction it needs in order to actually go anywhere.

Your unconscious Sun gate carries a second layer of the same theme, one other people tend to notice in you before you notice it yourself. Your unconscious Earth gate grounds that layer the way your conscious Earth grounds the first. Read as a set of four, the cross is less like four separate instructions and more like one theme seen from four angles at once.

The lines of your two Sun positions also set your profile, so your cross and your profile come from the same placements. That is why a 1/3 always has a Right Angle cross and a 5/1 always has a Left Angle one.

It helps to read the four gates as a single sentence rather than four separate facts. The conscious Sun names the theme. The conscious Earth says where it lands. The unconscious Sun adds what you carry without quite claiming it. The unconscious Earth grounds that too. None of the four gates on its own tells the whole story, and none of them cancels out the others.

The three geometries

Right Angle: personal destiny

Right Angle crosses go with the profiles 1/3, 1/4, 2/4, 2/5, 3/5, 3/6 and 4/6. Right Angle is described as personal destiny, a life theme that unfolds mainly through your own choices, in step with your Strategy and Authority.

Juxtaposition: fixed fate

The 4/1 profile is the only Juxtaposition profile, and its cross is described as fixed fate. The theme here tends to press in a particular direction regardless of how much the person tries to steer around it.

Left Angle: transpersonal karma

Profiles 5/1, 5/2, 6/2 and 6/3 carry Left Angle crosses, described as transpersonal karma. The theme unfolds mainly through other people rather than through the individual alone, which is part of why these profiles are so often defined by the calls, projections and relationships that come their way.

The four quarters

The 64 gates are also divided into four Quarters around the wheel, and every cross falls into one of them. The Quarter of Initiation carries a theme of purpose fulfilled through mind, working out how life is meant to be understood and begun. The Quarter of Civilization carries a theme of purpose fulfilled through form, the practical structures that let life actually function.

The Quarter of Duality carries a theme of purpose fulfilled through bonding, the relationships and agreements that hold people together. The Quarter of Mutation carries a theme of purpose fulfilled through transformation, change that moves through an individual and out into the people around them. Your cross sits in whichever Quarter your conscious Sun gate belongs to.

Living your cross

A cross is not a to-do list. It describes a theme. The specific decisions that express it still belong to your Strategy and your Authority.

Trying to force a cross into view tends to backfire. A Right Angle cross pushed on too hard starts to feel effortful in a way that personal destiny is not supposed to feel. A Left Angle cross chased in isolation, without the other people it depends on, tends to just sit quiet. The theme still unfolds. It does so on its own schedule, through Strategy and Authority followed consistently rather than through the theme itself being managed directly.

This is also why two people with the same cross can look like they are living it in different ways. The theme is shared. The route to it runs through each person's own type, Strategy and Authority, so the day to day shape of a shared cross rarely looks identical from the outside.
