The 5 Human Design Types
A Human Design type sorts how a chart is built into one of five patterns, each with its own way of engaging the world. Type comes from which centers are defined and how they connect, and it sets your Strategy, the practical starting point for every other part of the chart.
What a type actually is
A chart is built from nine centers, each either defined (colored in, working steadily) or undefined (open, taking in and amplifying whatever is around it). Type is what that specific mix adds up to. It is not a personality label chosen from a quiz.
Two charts can share a type and still look very different in the details. Gates, a profile and an Authority all vary within a type. What type gives you is a starting Strategy: the way of meeting the world that tends to reduce resistance for that particular design.
How type is determined
Two questions decide the type. First: is the Sacral defined? Second: does a motor center, meaning the Sacral, Solar Plexus, Heart or Root, connect all the way to the Throat, whether directly or through other defined centers?
A defined Sacral with no motor connected to the Throat makes a Generator. A defined Sacral with a motor connected to the Throat makes a Manifesting Generator. An undefined Sacral with no motor connected to the Throat makes a Projector. An undefined Sacral with the Heart, Solar Plexus or Root connected to the Throat makes a Manifestor.
One case sits outside both questions. A chart with no defined centers at all, meaning nothing anywhere is colored in, makes a Reflector. Its Sacral is undefined and no motor reaches the Throat, just as for a Projector, but a Projector always has at least one defined center somewhere.
The five types
Each type below carries its own Strategy, its own signature feeling when things are working and its own not-self theme when they are not. Four of the five have at least one defined center. The fifth has none at all.
- GeneratorStrategy: To respond. Signature: Satisfaction.
- Manifesting GeneratorStrategy: To respond, then inform. Signature: Satisfaction.
- ProjectorStrategy: Wait for the invitation. Signature: Success.
- ManifestorStrategy: To inform. Signature: Peace.
- ReflectorStrategy: Wait a lunar cycle (about 28 days) before big decisions. Signature: Surprise.
Strategy is the practical core
Everything else about a type description is background for one thing: Strategy. It is the specific way each type is built to meet opportunities, and it is the part meant to be practiced rather than just understood.
A Generator and Manifesting Generator respond to what shows up in front of them rather than starting from a blank page. A Projector waits to be recognized and invited before offering guidance or taking on the big commitments. A Manifestor informs the people affected before acting, so the action does not land as a surprise. A Reflector lets a full lunar cycle pass before committing to anything major.
None of these are rules imposed from outside. They describe the path each design already tends to take with the least resistance, once the chart's own mechanics are followed instead of overridden.
Signature and not-self as feedback
Each type also has a signature feeling and a not-self theme, and both work as feedback rather than a mood to chase or avoid. The signature is what tends to show up when Strategy is being lived: satisfaction, success, peace or surprise, depending on the type.
The not-self theme is what tends to show up when it is not: frustration, bitterness, anger or disappointment. Neither one is a verdict on a person's character. They are closer to a dashboard light, telling you whether the current approach to a decision or a week is actually working for that specific design.
Auras, in brief
Each type also carries a distinct aura, the field a person moves through the world inside. Generators and Manifesting Generators have an open, enveloping aura that pulls things toward them. Projectors have a focused, absorbing aura that takes people in one at a time. Manifestors have a closed, repelling aura, so their impact is often felt before it is explained. Reflectors have a resistant, sampling aura that tries on the feel of a place and lets it go again when they leave.
Aura is not something to manage directly. It comes with the type, and it is worth knowing about mainly so an ordinary reaction from other people does not get mistaken for something personal.
How to find your type
Type cannot be guessed accurately from a description, because two people with different underlying charts can read parts of themselves into more than one type. Most descriptions of the Sacral response or the closed aura sound at least a little familiar to almost anyone, which is exactly why self-typing from a list of traits tends to go wrong.
An accurate type comes from a full chart, calculated from an exact birth date, time and place, which maps every gate and center and shows exactly which connections are defined. The birth time matters more here than people expect. A few hours can move an activation into a neighboring gate, and occasionally that is enough to complete or break a channel and change which centers connect.
Once you have that chart, the type itself is only the starting point. Reading the matching type page for Strategy in practice, then the Authority page for how decisions actually get made, and the centers page for what each defined or open center means in your own chart, fills in the rest. Together those three pieces, type, Authority and the centers underneath them, describe far more about a chart than any single label can.
A question to sit with. Recall a recent choice that felt easy and right. Did it come from responding to something already in front of you, being invited in, informing someone first, or sitting with the question over time?
Questions
What are the 5 Human Design types?
Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, Manifestor and Reflector. Each is set by whether the Sacral is defined and whether a motor center connects to the Throat, except the Reflector, who has no defined centers at all.
How do I find my Human Design type?
You need a full chart calculated from your exact birth date, time and place. The chart shows which centers are defined and how they connect, which is what determines type.
Can your Human Design type change?
No. Type is set by your chart at birth, the same way your gates and centers are. What can change is how closely you actually live your Strategy.
Which Human Design type is best?
None is better than another. Each type describes a different way of engaging the world, with its own Strategy, and the value of knowing your type is practicing that Strategy rather than ranking it against the others.
